DESIRED LEARNING
OUTCOMES
At the end of the course you should:
- Be
able to identify various types of sailboats and name the major components of
these sailboats.
- Understand
and correctly use the basic sailing terms that describe the maneuvering of a
sailboat.
- Understand
the theory of the forces acting upon the boat and its sails.
- Be
able to properly put up and take down the sails, install rudder and
centerboard and the associated running rigging (main sheets, jib sheets,
etc.).
- Have
a working knowledge of the four fundamental “Rules of the Road”.
- Be
able to tie three knots and three hitches routinely used in boating.
- Be
able to leave and return to a dock and sail a triangular course which will
involve beating, reaching, running, tacking and gibing.
