ORIENTATION

DESIRED LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course you should: 

  1. Be able to identify various types of sailboats and name the major components of these sailboats.
  2. Understand and correctly use the basic sailing terms that describe the maneuvering of a sailboat.
  3. Understand the theory of the forces acting upon the boat and its sails.
  4. Be able to properly put up and take down the sails, install rudder and centerboard and the associated running rigging (main sheets, jib sheets, etc.).
  5. Have a working knowledge of the four fundamental “Rules of the Road”.
  6. Be able to tie three knots and three hitches routinely used in boating.
  7. Be able to leave and return to a dock and sail a triangular course which will involve beating, reaching, running, tacking and gibing.
