Sail Camp Basic Plan

US Sailing Certified Instructors

Monday (Book Chapters 1-8, 18) (Red book 1-5, 7)

9:00-9:15           Introductions; learn everyone’s name

                        Discuss agenda for the day, safety, and wind awareness

9:15-10:30         Break into 5 groups or teams; each group will rotate 5 stations

                        #1 Rigging prams: on the beach (Red book 1, 2, 4) include wind direction here

                        #2 Tack & Jibe: with lazy susan (pg. 107 in book shows a land drill)

                        #3 Knots: figure 8, bowline, cleat (Ch. 18) (Red book 3) create a knot story

                        #4 Rigging Optimist Dinghies: on the beach

                        #5 Paddle a kayak; Sparing a dinghy

10:30-11:45       Snack & First launch, everyone out of the water (Red book 4, 5, 7) Describe appropriate strategy for a safe and reasonable plan for the circumstances; wind direction; point of sail; current; obstructions. This procedure should be repeated with every launch throughout week. May include (Red book 14) landing briefly here; also (Red book 16) proper seating position/weight placement.

 11:45-12:45       LUNCH

                        Cooling off in sprinklers, volleyball, games in the shade, rest & relax

 12:45-1:45         Break into 3 groups; 3 stations discuss chapter 8 Points of Sail/Sailing Directions

                        #1 Points of Sail; on land with chalk circle and model boat (Red book 10) (#10 must be demonstrated in water later in camp)

                        #2 Make a wind indicator/compass/model

                        #3 Teams evaluate wind direction; use lazy susan points of sail

2:00-3:00`          Sail a course, of course

                        Simple course, practice and learn T-rule- Turn the tiller towards the trouble

                        Off water by 3:30 correct boat landing (Red book 14)

 3:30-4:00           Prepare to depart

                        Derig boats, gather all belongings, clean up area and self

  

Tuesday (Book chapters 9-12, 15, 16) (Red book 6, 8, 9, 11-13, 15, 17-19)

 9:00-9:30           Jeopardy Review

                        Rig boats

                        Review points of sail

                        Land practice (9, 10) Sailing upwind, tacking, getting out of irons (Red book 15, 19)

                        Jibing on lazy susan (Red book 11)

10:00-11:30       Out on Water

                        Sail diamond (Red book 10 points of sail, 11 jibing, 19 upwind sailing) (pick one rule SOP)

                        Follow the leader with emphasis on sail trim (Red book 8)

                        Demonstrate safety position on whistle (Red book 9)

                        Stop at safety boat (16) (Red book 6, 14) get a soda

                        Circle safety boat

11:30-12:30       LUNCH

                        Cool off in sprinklers, volleyball, games, rest & relax

12:45-1:30         Rules of the road game like chess

                        (Demonstrate with magnet board & hands on)(15)(Red book 18) pick a rule of the hour or morning etc.

1.       Starboard/Port tack SOP

2.       Sail/Power SOP

3.       Leeward/Windward LOW

4.       Boat on tack/Boat tacking/Jibing

5.       Overtaken/Overtaking boat

6.       Beating over Reaching or Running BOR

7.       Turn the tiller towards the trouble to avoid collision

1:30-3:30           Out on water & Capsize drill

                        Sail rectangular course, tack/Jibe on horn

                        Groups of 2 ashore for capsize drill (Red book 12)

3:30-4:00           Prepare to depart

                        Derig boats, gather all belongings, clean up area and self

 

 

 Wednesday (Book Chapters 14, 15, 17) (Red book 13)

 9:00-9:30           Jeopardy Review

                        Rig boats

 10:00-11:00       Practice sailing a specific course

                        Review rules of the road

 11:00-11:30       Sponge tag

 11:30-12:30       LUNCH

                        Cool off in sprinklers, volleyball, games, rest & relax

 12:30-2:00         Rescue man overboard in drill (Red book 13)

 2:00-2:30           Break

 2:30-3:30           Sail a course

Free sailing

3:30-4:00           Prepare to depart

                        Derig boats, gather all belongings, clean up area and self


 

Thursday (Book Chapters 13, 14) (Red book 14, 8, 10, etc)

 9:00-9:30           Jeopardy Review

                        Rig boats

 10:00-11:00       Docking; Landing & departing from dock (Red book 14, 6)

                        Instructor demo

                        Individual docking, along with an ABCAC finish course

 11:00-11:30       Flag relay from the beach 2 teams

 11:30-12:30       LUNCH

                        Cool off in sprinklers, volleyball, games, rest & relax

 12:30-2:00         Intro to racing

Starts, Course ABCF, rules of the road, finish

Other sailing vessels

Experience other boats at center (Sunfish)

 2:00-3:30           Racing and Practice

Review for test (written and practical)

 3:30-4:00           Prepare to depart

                        Derig boats, gather all belongings, clean up area and self

 

 Friday

 9:00-                 Jeopardy Review

                        Rig boats

                        Written test will occur in AM if time and weather permit

 Excursion to Island/Treasure Hunt

                        Observe sailing techniques

                        Refreshments (drink and snack) on arrival or when ever

                        Hunt for required items

                        Return to center recycle and trash

 Lunch @ center, special awards &certificate ceremony

Hobie flying

PM sailing or play of your choice
