These are proposed rules only, please feel free to comment and express your opinion.  As of 9/1/05

 

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY TO SAIL HSA BOATS – 15 SEPT 2005

 

FOR ALL CLASS AND TYPE BOATS:

-  MUST BE AN HSA BOAT USAGE MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING

-  BOAT IS TO BE LEFT SHIP-SHAPE AND BRISTOL FASHION (NEAT, TIDY, CLEAN, SECURED, ETC.)

      FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESCIND ALL BOAT USAGE PRIVILEGES! 

-  FILL OUT THE BOAT’S LOG BOOK; INCLUDE ANY AND ALL DAMAGE AND/OR DEFICIENCIES. 

      FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESCIND ALL BOAT USAGE PRIVILEGES! 

-  CONTRIBUTE TIME TO THE MAINTENANCE AND UPKEEP OF THE BOATS

      FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESCIND ALL BOAT USAGE PRIVILEGES! 

 

SMALL CLASS BOATS:

      -  DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO SAIL THE BOAT INCLUDING RIGHTING THE CAPSIZED BOAT.

      -  ANSWER BASIC SAFETY AND ‘RULES OF THE ROAD’ QUESTIONS

 

SWING KEEL CLASS BOATS:

- SUPPLY DOCUMENTATION OF HAVING PASSED AN APPROVED SAILING COURSE SUCH AS ASA 101, BASIC KEEL BOAT SAILING;

  OR

      -  TAKE THE WRITTEN EXAM THAT HSA USES IN ITS INTERMEDIATE SAILING CLASS, A PASSING GRADE IS 85 %;

      AND

-  OBTAIN A CHECK OUT IN THE SPECIFIC TYPE OF BOAT THAT YOU WISH TO SAIL.  NOTE THAT A CHECK OUT IN THE SAN JUAN 21 TYPE DOES NOT QUALIFY YOU TO TAKE OUT THE CATALINA 25.

               THE CHECK OUT WILL CONSIST OF BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

-      INSPECTION OF BOAT AND OPERATION OF ENGINE SYSTEMS, CENTER BOARD, RUDDER, SINK, HEAD, GALLEY AND SAIL SYSTEMS

               DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING MANEUVERS IN A WIND OF AT LEAST 10 KNOTS:

               -      MAN OVERBOARD UNDER SAIL AND POWER

               -      DROP ANCHOR UNDER SAIL AND SECURE BOAT FOR STORM

               -      GET UNDER WAY FROM ANCHOR USING SAILS ONLY

               -      LEAVING AND SECURING BOAT IN A SLIP UNDER POWER

               -      LEAVING AND SECURING BOAT AT A DOCK UNDER POWER

               -      LEAVING AND SECURING BOAT AT DOCK UNDER SAIL ONLY

               PROPER SECURING OF THE BOAT AFTER THE SAILING SESSION INCLUDING:

 

FIXED KEEL CLASS BOATS:

      -  SAME REQUIREMENTS AS FOR THE SWING KEEL CLASS OF BOATS ABOVE BUT IN A SPECIFIC TYPE OF FIXED KEEL BOAT

      AND

      -  HAVE A CURRENT MEMBERSHIP WITH A LEGITIMATE LOCAL BOAT TOWING COMPANY

      -  HAVE A WORKING VHF RADIO

      -  A CHECK OUT SESSION WILL ALSO INCLUDE A DEMONSTRATION OF OFF SHORE SAILING SKILLS

 

WHO CAN GIVE YOU A CHECK OUT IN A SPECIFIC CLASS AND TYPE OF BOAT:

-  SMALL CLASS BOATS, JUST ABOUT ANY ONE AT THE CLUB WHO CAN SAIL ONE AND KNOWS THE BASIC QUESTION TO ASK ABOUT SAFETY, HSA RULES AND “RULES OF THE ROAD”.

-  SWING KEEL CLASS BOATS: STEWART MUNRO ( VICE COMMODORE ), BILL EVES AND JIM NEEDHAM;  BILL FIELDS FOR THE CATALINA 25;  JOHN BALDWIN FOR THE BUCCANEER.

      -  FIXED KEEL BOATS: STEWART MUNRO, BILL EVES AND JIM NEEDHAM

 

THE COMMODORE WILL KEEP A WRITTEN RECORD OF PERSONS WHO ARE CHECKED OUT IN THE

CLASS AND TYPE OF BOAT (SMALL BOAT CLASS EXCLUDED).

THE COMMODORE WILL ONLY ACCEPT PERSONAL STATUS UP DATES FROM THE ABOVE LISTED PEOPLE.

YOUR NAME AND CURRENT CHECK OUT STATUS MUST APPEAR ON THIS LIST TO TAKE OUT A BOAT.

 

WHY IS A CHECK OUT REQUIRED IN EACH TYPE OF BOAT?  BECAUSE THE SYSTEMS AND THE WAY IN WHICH EACH TYPE OF BOAT HANDLES IS NOT THE SAME FOR ALL TYPES BOATS WITHIN A CLASS.

 

WHAT DOES “CONTRIBUTE TIME TO THE MAINTENANCE AND UPKEEP OF THE RESPECTIVE TYPE OF BOATS” MEAN ?    ONE IS REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MAINTENANCE AND UPKEEP, THINGS LIKE GENERAL CLEANING, FIXING BROKEN GEAR, ETC.  THIS IS A PART OF WHAT BELONGING TO THE CLUB IS ABOUT.   IF YOU HAVE THE SKILLS TO SAIL, THEN YOU HAVE THE SKILLS NEEDED TO KEEP THE BOATS SAILING!
